Montserrat, 25 minutes from Can Robira

A practical guide to enjoying Montserrat at your own pace: monastery, mountain, hikes, viewpoints, kids and where to sleep nearby. Written from a farmhouse 25 minutes by car.

Can Robira is a farmhouse at the foot of Montserrat, in Els Hostalets de Pierola (Anoia). 25 minutes by car from the monastery, sleeping here is the rural alternative to staying up top: peace and quiet, nature and a stress-free climb the next morning.

How to reach the Monastery from Can Robira

The most comfortable way is by car along the BV-1201 towards Esparreguera, then onto the BP-1121, which climbs straight up to the monastery. About 25 minutes without traffic. If you prefer to leave the car below, drive to the Monistrol-Vila station and take the rack railway up (it works like a shuttle train). It takes longer, but the final climb is beautiful and kids love it.

What to see at the Monastery

The essentials fit in half a day. If you have time and want a calmer pace, it's worth a full day.

  • Basilica and the Moreneta — Catalonia's black Madonna and patron saint.
  • Escolanía de Montserrat — one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, sings the Virolai at 13:00 on weekdays.
  • Montserrat Museum — collection with works by Caravaggio, Monet, Picasso and Dalí.
  • Plaça de Santa Maria — to understand the architecture of the complex.
  • Mercat dels pagesos — local mountain produce, great for taking home honey, cheese or liqueurs.

Mountain hikes, sorted by difficulty

Montserrat is a real mountain. These are the routes we recommend depending on who you come with and how much time you have.

Easy

Sant Miquel — Viewpoint and monastery in 1 h

Start at the square, easy walk to the small chapel and back. Ideal with small children and older guests. Excellent views of the complex.

Medium

Sant Joan — Funicular + 2-hour walk

Take the Sant Joan funicular and do the circular route past the hermitages. No major elevation, best mountain views.

Medium

Santa Cova — Way of the Rosary

Descent from the monastery to the cave where, according to tradition, the Moreneta was found. Modernist sculptures (Gaudí, Limona) along the way.

Hard

Sant Jeroni — Summit of Montserrat

The highest point (1,236 m). 4-5 hours round trip. Only with proper shoes, water and reasonable fitness. The summit gives you a panoramic view of half Catalonia.

Best time of day and season

Arrive early (before 10:00) or come up in the afternoon (after 15:00) to avoid the midday tour buses. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures and the mountain at its best. Winter can bring fog and cold. August means crowds.

Montserrat Millennium 2025

In 2025 the monastery marked one thousand years since its consecration by Abbot Oliba in 1025. Throughout the year there were special events, exhibitions and concerts. Although the main celebration is over, the monastery keeps related activities and a new tour of its thousand years of history. Ask at the ticket office if you're interested.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do I need to see Montserrat?

For an essential visit (basilica + Moreneta + Escolanía + a viewpoint), half a day is enough. Add the funicular and a short hike and you'll need a full day. To climb Sant Jeroni or do longer routes, plan a whole day with no afternoon plans.

Is it better to sleep up at the monastery or nearby?

Up top you sleep inside the complex and see Montserrat without crowds at dawn and dusk, but prices are high and rooms are limited. Nearby, in a farmhouse like Can Robira, you gain rural quiet, better prices, nature and a traffic-free morning climb. For families and longer stays, sleeping nearby usually wins.

Do I need to book tickets for the monastery?

Access to the basilica is free and needs no booking. For the Museum, the Sant Joan funicular or the Moreneta chapel, it's worth booking online in high season to skip the queue.

Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility?

The monastery complex is well adapted: step-free access, lifts and accessible toilets. The basilica is accessible. Mountain trails are not.

And visiting with small children?

It works well: open spaces, short walks, animals (goats), funicular and the Escolanía usually charm them. Bring water, a hat and a sturdy stroller. The rack railway and funiculars are an attraction in themselves.
