The Penedès, neighbour of Can Robira

A short guide to the Penedès for guests: cavas, small wineries, charming villages and routes to lose yourself in the vines. No brochures.

Can Robira sits literally on the border between the Anoia and the Alt Penedès. That means vineyards, family wineries and wine villages 15-30 minutes by car. If you're into cava, xarel·lo or winery visits, this is your guide.

Cavas and wineries

The Penedès is the cradle of cava. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is home to the big houses (Codorníu, Freixenet) and many small ones that are arguably more rewarding. Vilafranca is the capital of still wine. There are family wineries of every size, almost all with guided tours and tastings. We suggest a big one to grasp the history and a small one to discover the craft.

Villages worth visiting

Short list. Each village covers a different visit profile.

Capital of cava

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

The epicentre of cava. Visits to the big cavas, the cava museum (Vinseum) and a pleasant old town to walk and eat in.

Capital of wine

Vilafranca del Penedès

A historic city with a life of its own: Vinseum, the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Saturday market and serious restaurants. A good base for a day of small-winery visits.

Charming village

Sant Pau d'Ordal

Small village surrounded by vines and olives, with family wineries and restaurants (Cal Xim, Cal Pere del Maset) that are gastronomic landmarks.

Nature · Castle

Castell de Subirats

Medieval castle above the vines with one of the best views in the county. Great to combine with a winery visit.

How to plan the day

For a first visit to the Penedès, we suggest this combination:

  • Morning — Guided tour at a winery or cava (with booking).
  • Lunchtime — Lunch at a village restaurant (Cal Xim, Cal Pere del Maset, La Cava d'en Sergi).
  • Afternoon — A walk through Vilafranca or Sant Sadurní, with time for a quieter second tasting.
  • Sunset — Views from the Castell de Subirats before heading back to the farmhouse.

And to drink Penedès wine at Can Robira

At the farmhouse itself we make natural wines (Robira, N4, Salada, Llamp i Coixaina, Tabbu) and pour them at events, tastings and private meals. If you're curious about how we make wine, we can host a tasting or take you through the cellar during your stay. Just ask.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book winery visits?

Yes, almost always. Big houses (Codorníu, Freixenet) have set times; small ones need direct contact. In high season and weekends, book days ahead.

Can I go to a tasting if I don't know about wine?

Yes. Most visits are designed for any level. The difference between a big cava and a small one is not difficulty, but focus: the small one shows you the craft, the big one tells you the story.

What's the best season for the Penedès?

Spring (March to June) for green vines and mild weather; early autumn (September and October) for the harvest. In August small wineries usually close for holidays.

Is it good with children?

Some wineries offer family visits with grape juice and activities. Best to ask in advance. Villages and castles are perfectly fine with kids.
